Creepy Mythological Creatures

While there are a lot of different creatures to read about, there are some that are a whole lot creepier than others! These creatures will keep you awake and night and make you fear the dark for their appearance and their actions.

1. Incubus

This is a male demon that creeps up on people, mostly women, while they are asleep. From the time he enters in the room he goes into the dream that the person is having. He has sexual intercourse with these people and tries to father a child. Repeated visits from Incubus was believed to cause health problems as well as death. He had the appearance of a ghost, although he had a demon face and wings. These creatures are associated with Medieval Christian demonology, and there are many stories still around about them today.

2. Seshnag

If you’re scared of sea monsters, then this is one creature that will be creepy to you. It’s a serpent with 1,000 heads that is weird, but not actually evil. It’s also got a massively large body that generally lives floating on an ocean of milk. It also had brothers that hurt other people and caused problems in nature. It’s the king of all other serpents and can cause earthquakes each time it shifts its massive body. Seshnag is generally found in Hindu mythology and is believed to be something that can destroy the world.

The appearance of these creatures is extremely scary, as they have no head but they do have eyes and a mouth on their chest. These look just like men in the shape of their body, just without the head. This is a tribe that was believed to eat men who lived in South Africa. They were believed to have fought the Romans from the third century on, and they lived everywhere from Africa to Egypt. They were found in Greek mythology and were even featured in works by Shakespeare.

3. The Leshy

This woodland creature can be found in Slavic mythology. He lives in the forest protecting the trees, animals and other wildlife. His appearance is that of a tall man, but he has white skin with blue blood and bright green eyes. He can also change his size to any height he would like to be. The leshy is also a shapeshifter and can transform into many different creatures, animals and even humans. He likes to trick people, hide things, turn clothes inside-out and cause other forms of mischief. He also lures people into caves to tickle them to death and kidnaps young women.

4. Aswang

This is a scary creature that is easy to find in Filipino folklore. It’s a hybrid of a witch and a vampire, and it’s cannibalistic. It eats both living people and those that are dead, but it can also turn into a dog or boar. They appear in human form during the day, but at night they turn into features that look like old women with gray hair, veiny skin and demonic wings. People who live in Antipolo believe this creature exists near them, as many people have noted seeing them.

5. Bakhtak

Bakhtak is part of Persian folklore and is a being that affects your sleep. It makes you have horrible nightmares, a feeling of terror because you can’t wake up and a heaviness that is in your chest. This being lives to cause people sleep paralysis as well as bad dreams, as it brings him glee. It’s believed that this creature looks like a goblin, with pointy ears and wrinkly skin in a small and thick body.

6. Berserkers

These Germanic warriors had massively huge bodies with horns on the top of their head. They fought with extreme rage and fought uncontrollably until they won. It’s believed that they took drugged foods in order to fight the way that they did and that they could transform into wolves, wild bulls and even bears. Their bloodshot eyes could creep anyone out, as could their incredible strength and overall giant appearance. These can be found in Old Norse literature if you’d like to read more about them and their battles.
